Dental Crowns

Has your dentist told you that you need a crown, but you’re a little confused as to what a crown exactly is and how it works? At Advanced Dental Solutions in Anchorage we believe in empowering our patients to take charge of their own oral health. To do that you need to understand what’s going on in your mouth and why your dentist may be recommending certain treatments. Let’s take a few minutes to talk about the what and why of dental crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over the tooth to protect it and support its structure. Crowns are made of different materials depending on their desired function. Your dentist will help you decide which material will best serve your needs.

Why Do I Need a Crown?

There are many reasons why your dentist may advise you that you need a crown. Some of these are:

  • To cover and support a tooth after a large filling has left its structure compromised
  • To hold together parts of a cracked or very weak tooth
  • To restore a tooth that is severely worn down or misshapen
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To provide a better aesthetic to a tooth that is severely discolored

What Is It Like to Get a Crown?

A crown is normally placed in two separate dental visits. During the first visit, your dentist will focus on preparing the tooth to receive the crown. He may need to file it down or build it back up depending on the condition of the tooth. Then he will take an impression of your teeth which will be used to custom fit your crown. He’ll place a temporary crown, which you will wear until the permanent crown is ready. When it is, you will return to the office to have it installed.
